What’s black, white and red all over?

No, it’s not a sunburnt penguin, it’s me! Apologies, it’s been a while since I crowbarred a terrible joke into a title, and I was getting the DTs.

Anyway, never one to give up easily, I had another crack at the pleather midi with marginally more success, I hope. I’ve heeded my own advice, keeping it simple with OTK boots, a white shirt and a silk scarf for that all important ‘pop’ *cringe* of colour.

Sometimes simplicity is your best friend

This morning I spent an inordinate amount of time faffing around, trying to get a faux leather midi-skirt to work, trying various permutations of tops, shoes and jackets. Sometimes you just have to admit you’re beaten!

So instead I thought I’d pare it back and wear something really simple. And it doesn’t get any simpler than slim fitting black ankle skimmers and a v-neck jumper. I’ve added a shot of personality with the leopard loafers and burgundy lipstick, and the fact that the pine-green jumper is one of my best hues keeps it from looking too drab.

Monday Morning Lust List – Next

Well, here’s a lust list I never thought I’d be doing, but it has recently come to my attention that Next may not just be the place I buy the kids’ nursery clothes anymore. It started with one lovely jacket jacket (which I’m going to order), and then on closer inspection of the site, it turned out that the jacket wasn’t a one off, and they really do have quite a few nice things!

For example, how cute is this jacket? I had a lot of positive feedback about my el cheapo H&M jacket featured here and this would be a good option if you wanted to recreate the look:

Pink Textured Jacket - £45

I love the metallic thread shot through the fabric, which makes it a little dressier, so you could also try it over a silk blouse and jeans for a night out.

I don’t yet own a pair of printed trousers, but I really like this pair:

Printed Cigarette Trousers - £38

I think the monochrome, small scale pattern will make them very versatile and easy to wear. I’d probably wear them with clashing printed slippers, a fitted t-shirt and a statement necklace.

If there is one thing I think Next does well, it is the slubby top. They usually have a variation on these every year, and I really like them:

Slub Top - £12

At £12 and in a variety of colours, you can’t go too far wrong!

Continuing on the casual summer clothing theme, I also really like this maxi dress:

Marl Jersey Maxi Dress - £25

Also available in navy marl, this dress is so easy to wear, and would be great thrown over a bikini on holiday. I would wear it with last year’s neon Topshop flat sandals. I might also add in this tote:

Zebra Print Leather Ponyskin Tote - £82

I’m a sucker for a bit of animal print, and I love this simple ponyskin tote. Perfect for slinging all my toddler crap into on a day out, the shape is quite reminiscent of the tan Zara tote everyone went nuts over a few seasons ago (and which I always thought was rather dull!)

And on the subject of Zara, ahem, homages, these shoes are a lot like a pair Zara did last season and I missed out on, so I think I might add them to my order! And look, they do them in my favourite colour!

Microsuede Strap Point Shoe £28

I love the ankle strap detail. I think they’d look very sexy with cropped trousers – maybe the printed pair above!

How fab is this neon friendship bracelet?:

Neon Friendship Bracelet - £7.50

I think it has a look of Shourouk about it, for about a millionth of the price. This would look fab peeping out from the cuff of a denim shirt.

Now I know you’ve all been waiting with baited breath to see the jacket that started it all… Well, here it is:

Grey Jersey Quilted Biker Jacket - £55

A slightly edgier alternative to the jersey blazer and a more summer appropriate version of the leather biker, this jacket looks set to be a winner for me. I’m not a great wearer of cardigans (can anyone busty manage it without looking like a member of the WI? If so, how?) so this is going to be the perfect cover up on slightly chillier days.

So there you have it, my round up of the best of Next, and there were quite a few other things I liked but didn’t have the time to include.

What do you think? Have I been missing a veritable treasure trove all this time, or have they upped their game recently?

How to age 10 years in a week….

Step 1. Have a child, and allow it to prevent you from having more than 4 hours sleep a night for 20 months (ok may take longer than a week)

Step 2. Send child to nursery where it will get a nasty virus.

Step 3. Stay up most of the night, every night for a week dealing with said child and sibling.

Step 4. Catch virus.

Step 5. Schedule driving test for 8am.

Step 6. Do not sleep at all.

Step 7. Fail driving test.

Yes, safe to say it’s not been the best of weeks, which is apparent even in the Lo-Def image quality of my iPhone pic, but hey I’d lose a bit of integrity if I only posted photos of me at my best though maybe putting on a bit of slap wouldn’t have killed me. I have, however, lost 5lbs, so the old adage about clouds and linings holds.

Another day…

…another photo of a knackered woman with a ludicrously bright bag! This time the neon Zatchel I ordered from the BrandAlley sale posted about here. When I dropped off the children to my parents’ this morning, my Dad, always the comedian, asked if it was a safety measure. It has also drawn a few comments, uniquely from men, in the office this morning. Whatevs, it’s cheering me up!

Another new item I have on today is this gorgeous bracelet, from Bijoux by Desi F at Etsy. I love this store and am planning a lot more purchases from this talented lady!

(God, I look haggard, when will my children sleep?!)

Skirt – Moschino
Tights – Falke
Shoes – Russell & Bromley

(p.s. you can’t tell from the photo, but the skirt is actually polka dot!)

‘If the goods aren’t for sale…

…don’t put them in the shop window’ is not a philosophy I subscribe to, so when my husband told me he thought this dress was too sexy for our shared workplace, I threw down the gauntlet.

20130221-111217.jpgDress down with flat boots and a casual belt, I think it looks perfectly work appropriate! I am going out after work tonight and won’t have time to change completely post-bedtime apocalypse, so I’ll be swapping accessories and sexing it up for drinks with friends. I will post a quick pic later before I get legless.

Dress – Me&Em (currently half price!)
Boots – Dune (past season)
Belt – Whistles (past season)
Watch – Michael Kors

Why do hummingbirds hum?

Because they don’t know the words! (Sorry).

I’m neither looking nor feeling my best today after a very disturbed night with the children. However, I can always rely on this McQ skirt to cheer me up! I fell in love with it as soon as I saw it, but showed unusual restraint, sending a link to my husband when it finally went into the sale a few days before my birthday. Luckily he took the hint!20130220-141733.jpgThe skirt is still available in a M here, though I should warn you it comes up a little large. I got the S and it is slightly loose on the waist. And if you need any more convincing, here is a picture showing all the beautiful detail:
